Monica's Running Journey

I first got into running during covid lockdown, when the gyms closed and I was desperate to find new ways to exercise. A friend nominated me for the Run 5, Nominate 5 challenge, and for someone who never counted themselves as 'a runner' I was over the moon that I managed to complete it. That one day was the start of my love for running, and a couple of years later I ran my first half marathon - a distance I never thought I'd be able to complete. I became addicted to setting myself the next challenge, and I secured a spot at the 2024 London Marathon for another charity. My training block was tough - months of injury, rehab, recovery, injury and repeat. After managing to overcome all the injury 2 months out, I crammed in a lot of last minute training but then came down with illness 3 days out from the marathon. I was exhausted, but managed to complete it, even if it wasn't to the time that I had been hoping for.

It was one of the best days that I'll treasure forever, but with the rollercoaster of injury and illness (which so many fellow runners will relate), I couldn't help but feel I have unfinished business with London! I was absolutely thrilled when Step Together Volunteering offered me one of their spots for London Marathon 2026, and to help fundraise for all the incredible work that they do.

Running has become such a big part of my life - not just for the fitness and mental clarity but a way to meet new friends - through my local female-only running group, explore on holiday, kick-start my mornings with chasing sunrises, and try new things (I've recently started visiting the athletics track which is a run way to mix up the training!). Being such a big part of my routine, I'm excited for the new challenge of London 2026, and to support the wonderful work that Step Together Volunteering do.

Becks' Running Journey

I’m Becks and I’m from South Africa! I started my running journey around 2 years ago after watching the Bath half marathon and I was so inspired and immediately wanted to be a part of the running community. Since then I have taken on half marathons and completed my first marathon last year. I absolutely love running and find it incredibly peaceful and a very good way to unwind after work.

I feel so incredibly grateful to be given the opportunity to run the London Marathon for this incredible charity and I believe the work that Step Together Volunteering do is incredible and so important.
